Even if I’m part of a group, I don’t want to be addressed as you guys because That’s gang talk, low class, disrespectful. When you’re speaking directly to me you can catch my attention by using my name. What if I’m part of a group? You can still catch my attention with the word you. Did you know that the word you is both singular and plural? You can speak to a group and use the word you and be grammatically correct. More importantly when speaking to a group, the word you is more engaging and more polite. When you are speaking to a group you want each person to feel that you are speaking directly to them as an individual. That’s why it’s better to use one to one language. You guys is trash talk. When speaking to your senior leadership, would you call them you guys? What impression would that make? When you’re interviewing for a job, would you address the committee as you guys – then wonder why you didn’t get the job? Would you address the members of your place of worship as you guys and wonder why you landed in purgatory? When you use the phrase you guys, there are three unintended messages: 1 You don’t respect me because you see me as part of a mob. 2 You’re uneducated because you don’t realize that the word you is both plural and singular. 3 You are unable or unwilling to connect with your audience because you see a crowd not a collection of individuals, Should I respond back to you with Hey you guy?
